How Belly Dancing exercises the body:

You will learn how use your entire body to create isolations. These movements are good for strengthening the muscles in the back, finding out what your stomach muscles are capable of, endurance and building confidence. This is all combined into a graceful form put to beautiful music. Whether your goal is simply for exercise or to become a performer, the classes are designed to fit both of these needs.

Who is Belly Dancing good for?

Everyone!! To quote one of my dance instructors, world famous Morocco of New York, "It's like yoga and yogurt put together". Both men and women have enjoyed being in my classes. Young adults are also welcome.

Attire

Sometimes I hear people say to me, "Oh, I can't take your class, I do not want to expose my belly." Well, it is not necessary for you to expose your belly. You may dress however you feel comfortable. I recommend wearing a leotard, excerciese pants, unitard or bicycle shorts and/or exercise top. What I prefer in class is that I am able to see what your knees, feet, ribs and hips are doing. For example, if you wear a long skirt I will not be able to see your feet and knees. I also recommend you wear a hip scarf so you can feel your hips. This allows you to gauge your movement. Personally I prefer to dance barefoot. You may wear ballet slippers or jazz sandals or socks that have a no-slip surface on the bottom. Just do not wear something that will cause you to fall.

In class, we all stay focused on what we are doing. We learn to accept our bodies and love what we have and make it move gracefully and with purpose. We enjoy who we are. If you are striving to improve your body, the class will only serve to help this goal.
